Emily was a beacon of joy and warmth, known for her adventurous spirit, both in trying new foods and exploring new destinations. She had an innate ability to befriend everyone she met, lighting up rooms with her fantastic sense of humor and her incredibly thoughtful nature. Emily’s life was a testament to her love for living fully and her dedication to making others’ lives better. She often wrote heartfelt notes and gave thoughtful gifts, small gestures that left lasting impacts.

Her love for reading was profound, with the Harry Potter series being her favorite. She especially admired Luna Lovegood and Sirius Black, drawn to their unique blend of bravery and kindness. Emily dreamed of a career that would allow her to travel the world, immersing herself in different cultures and adventures. Despite her illness, she remained brave and never once complained, embodying a resilience that inspired everyone around her.

Diagnosis Day

In early March, Emily mentioned she was seeing double and her coordination seemed off. She started running into things and tripping. A vision check showed everything was fine, but a few weeks later, her eye began to turn inward. Concerned, her parents took her to a pediatrician, who referred them to an ophthalmologist. The local specialist then recommended a visit to the University of Michigan.

On March 18, 2022, Emily underwent an MRI at the University of Michigan. After the procedure, they were in the cafeteria when the call came with the results. The following Wednesday, they met with a doctor to discuss treatment options. The diagnosis was devastating, but Emily faced it with the same courage she displayed throughout her life.

A fellow DIPG mom, Shannon DelVerne, connected Emily’s family with the ChadTough Foundation. Shannon, with her uncanny sense of when someone was having a bad day, became a guiding light. Emily was fortunate to receive treatment at the University of Michigan under Dr. Koschmann and his team, where they formed a close bond with Rebecca, the nurse practitioner.

Throughout her journey, Emily’s spirit never wavered. She continued to live her life with the same adventurous and thoughtful approach, bringing light and love to those around her. Her story is a reminder of the strength of the human spirit and the power of kindness, even in the face of unimaginable challenges.
