Dear Chad,
This morning, I stepped outside and saw an orange caterpillar making its way across the walkway. I stopped in my tracks because it made me think of you instantly. I could just see you rushing over to gently scoop it up and move it out of harm’s way, but not before giving it your curious little inspection. That was so you. You always noticed the small things.
I can’t believe you’d be turning 15 this year. And I still can’t believe it’s been almost 10 years since we lost you. Would you still love sushi, inappropriate music, and bugs? I have no doubt. I know you’d be so proud of your big brothers, CJ and Tommy. You would be cheering them on every step of the way, probably from the sidelines with Tootie by your side. Would you be a football player too? Or would you have followed your own path, found your own thing? I think about that all the time.
There are so many questions that swirl through my mind every day. So many moments I wish I could share with you. I miss you so much, sweet boy. I wish more than anything that things could have been different.
But once again this year, we’ll celebrate your birthday in a way that helps us carry on with purpose, with you at the center of it all. Our RunTough Family Fun Day is more than just a way to ease the ache… it’s a celebration of the movement you inspired, one that’s changing the world for other kids like you.
This year’s theme is “Fight Like a Kid,” and it couldn’t be more perfect. That’s exactly what you did. You fought with all your heart, through pain and struggle, while still loving your family, dog, and friends. You fought to just be a kid. All you ever wanted was to be Chad.
So in your honor, we’re continuing your fight for the kids who come next. For the kids who deserve a chance to grow up, to turn 15, to chase bugs, eat sushi, dance to loud music, and maybe choose football or their own way. The chance to just be.
We love you. We miss you. And we honor you every single day in everything we do. Until we meet again, sweet boy.
Love, Mommy
